# Meet StringBiz: The Tennis Racket Stringing App I Wished Existed
## From Tennis Player to Amateur Stringer (and Accidental Business Owner) I only picked up tennis seriously during the pandemic. My family and I moved to a community that happened to have two very lonely private tennis courts, and this gave us a chance to get outside and get some exercise. One day I met a coach giving lessons to another couple and the next week began what will be a 'rest of my life' hobby in tennis. I took lessons weekly, hit with other students at their lessons, improved my game month by month until I joined some USTA 4.0 teams.

Like a lot of tennis players, I started stringing my own rackets because… well, I was breaking strings regularly. Paying someone else every couple of weeks in addition to lesson costs and equipment adds up fast. It started simple — one portable machine (a MiStringer), a couple packs of string, and some Saturday mornings drinking coffee and taking way to long to figure out how to tie a parnell knot.
*My very first stringing effort on my portable machine...It worked, mostly.*
Then I told friends and teammates I'd ventured into stringing my own stuff. “Hey, can you string mine too?” “Sure, why not?”
Before long, I had turned into my group's racket stringer. In my head, that meant I could upgrade toa better machine and this 'side hustle' would pay the machine off. That also meant I was starting to pile up a disorganized box of various kinds of strings in reels, sets, half sets, etc. I'd buy stuff I found on sale, or someone would give me their racquet with their own string. Then the inevitable conversation went like this:
"Hey, can you string my racquet?"
"Sure, what kind of string do you want?"
"Oh, I don't really know, what do you have?"
"Um, well, I'm pretty sure I have some hyper-g... actually, let me get back to you.. What tension do you want?"
"I have no idea what it was strung at last, whatever you think..."
Then I'd go home and rummage through my box of stuff, text my friend back and forth trying to figure it out, etc.

## Why Existing Racket Stringing Software Didn’t Work for Me So that wasn't ideal. Naturally, I thought about just using a spreadsheet or google doc. I looked for an app to help me manage customers, jobs, and inventory. But the tennis stringing software out there just didn’t click. Some looked clunky, others were gated behind what seemed like a pricy subscription. Others weren’t really designed for baby stringers like me at all, and none fit the way I actually worked. What did mine and others like me's workflows look like? Where were the challenges? (inventory, history, time management, cost). What stuff did I want to track? How do I want to get paid? Do I need this to work on a mobile device (yes).
Since I spend my days working with software, I figured: why not build something for myself? So, that is what I did. I spent a weekend writing up the framework and ideas and starting piecing together what I was looking for. Several more weekends and evenings later, I had me an app I was actually pretty stoked to use. Then I showed it to a few people and they said "You should share that!", and I thought, why not! And here we are.
